What is the goal of taking the statues down? There is an old saying, those who do not learn from history is doomed to repeat it. Do we want to repeat the Confederate? I don’t. Instead of erasing history we should add accurate plaques to the monuments that tell the rest of the story.
For Confederate Monuments add this:
(Person or Group Name) fought for the Confederate States of America against the United States of America. The Confederate States of America wanted to establish mandatory perpetual generational slavery in their member states and expand this brand of slavery into Latin and South America. This ghastly vision of the future is what (Person or Group Name) fought and or died to bring into the world. Despite (Person or Group Name) efforts liberty prevailed, and the American Dream was able to overcome darkness and move onto greater heights.
If the statues come down in 20 years, we will see stylized images of Robert E. Lee and Nathan Bedford Forrest call them great revolutionaries, like the racist murder Che Guevara. By 2040 Robert E. Lee will have his history rewritten to make him a friend of “The black (who) is indolent and a dreamer; spending his meager wage on frivolity or drink,” but not American black of course.
This is the future if we tear now statutes. But let’s get real they don’t care about Confederate generals the people leading this want to take down the statues and monument of the founding fathers and replace them with Mao, Lenin, and Marx. But that is a topic for a different article.
